It focuses on commercially viable startups with dual-purpose technologies- a private sector & a government application, including companies with autonomous technology with the ability to detect, track, identify, characterize, attribute & mitigate unmanned aerial systems, or anything related.

Impact Investing: Mapping the Landscape (by Next Wave Foundation and Pipeline Angels)

1:00 pm - 6:00 pm; 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm VIP Reception

Separate registration is here.

Join active impact investors for an opportunity to network with like-minded funders and map out the landscape of impact investing from pre-seed funding through later stage venture capital.  The result will be an entrepreneur friendly directory of funders in this space that will allow us to map out impact funders by the stage of the companies they invest in, as well as by sector, geography, gender lens, and more.

This program looks to build stronger relationships across the impact funding landscape to identify synergies in our efforts to collaborate and to support promising Impact startups to achieve success.  Attendees will get to:

  • Meet and learn more about different funders by sectors/geography/stage/other screens
  • Start building stronger relationships across funding landscape
  • Build shared understanding of language for impact investing
  • End meeting with solid progress on developing the impact landscape map that has been contributed to by everyone in the room.

Fundamentals of Investing in Startups (ACA’s “Angel 101”)

8:30 am - 12:00 pm (Registration and coffee available at 8:00 am)

Should you include angel investments in startup companies in your asset portfolio?  Join ACA in a new half-day seminar introducing accredited investors to the fundamentals of angel investing, led by seasoned pros.  This is a great chance to get information and insights to determine if angel investing is right for you, to meet other angels to connect to as you consider investment opportunities, and to learn the key points of making good investments.  Many experienced angels tell us they wish they would have had education like this when they first started – it might have saved them some money. The seminar will provide insights into angel investing as an asset class, with a focus on anticipated returns, portfolio strategy, valuation of early-stage companies, conducting due diligence, understanding term sheets and angel involvement in portfolio companies after the investment. Attendees receive a detailed workbook, as well as a copy of The Fundamentals of Angel Investing by Hambleton Lord and Christopher Mirabile (a $25 value), as part of their registration.

The seminar is led by a strong group of angel investors.  The moderator is Marcia Dawood, an experienced angel investor who has led many education sessions across the US.

ACA is very interested in growing the number of angel investors in the US and beyond, and particularly in growing the diversity of people who become active angel investors.  Participate in discussions, learning and networking with new and experienced angels, and learn the basics.

Boston Ecosystem Tours

8:45 am - 2:00 pm

Boston is home to an amazing set of accelerators, university programs, co-working spaces and other initiatives that successfully help entrepreneurs start and grow their businesses.  Several of these initiatives will host open houses for ACA Summit attendees to see their locations, get insights from leaders on what makes them “tick,” and even meet some of the companies that participate in their programs.   ACA is setting up bus tours that leave from the Summit venue, the Westin Copley Place and visit three to four of these ecosystem players, and get everyone back to the Westin for the start of the 2018 ACA Summit. Registrants will select their exact tour closer to  the event.  Buses leave the Westin hotel at 8:45 am and return at 2:00 pm and the tours include lunch:

Tour A:  Innovate@BU, Bolt, Autodesk BuildSpace, Mass Challenge, and LearnLaunch

Tour B:  Greentown Labs, Cambridge Innovation Center, TiE Boston/ TiE ScaleUp, The Engine at MIT

Separate registration is required.

International Exchange Workshop

8:30 am - 2:00 pm (Registration and coffee available at 8:00 am)

International Exchange Workshop Agenda

ACA’s popular International Exchange is an interactive program for angels and ecosystem players to share information about investing trends in different companies, with the goal of adapting ideas you like for your own country.  The program is fast paced and includes speakers from North America, Europe, Pacific Rim/ Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America – with the latest statistics and innovative approaches to expand angel investing across the globe.  Given current media attention, a key focus of the event will be what is happening with women as investors and entrepreneurs.  This program helps angels deepen global connections and relationships, leading to more sharing of angel knowledge and cross-border investing or collaboration.  Join this interactive program, and if you’re interested, please register for the International Dinner held later the same evening to continue the conversations from the International Exchange.  Wendee Wolfson, active angel with a special interest in connecting angels across the globe, leads this program.
